Tesco Ireland role out Intell-Hood into their stores in a pledge to reduce their energy consumption and reduce energy costs
Tesco Ireland is one of the largest food retailers in Ireland operating 93 multi format stores nationwide. Tesco Ireland is the price leader in the Irish grocery market investing €30 million in the business in the past five years.
One of Tesco Ireland’s newest stores, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, was opened in 2006 and has been designed in response to customer feedback. Andrew Collie, Manager of Tesco Clonmel says “Our new store will bring the very best of modern shopping to the town of Clonmel”.
As part of Tesco Ireland’s investment in energy saving, they have installed Intelli-Hood demand based ventilation system into Clonmel as a trial site and are now in the process of rolling it out to more of their portfolio of stores. Tesco Plc take energy saving very seriously pledging they will reduce the carbon footprint of their existing stores and distribution centres around the world and will be contributing to the development of sustainable low-carbon technology. Intelli-Hood energy saving system controls the
ventilation fan speed depending on the conditions in the kitchen hoods. Temperature and
optic sensors are used to detect heat and steam and will change the fan speed accordingly. This saves, in the case of Tesco Clonmel, 70% of ventilation fan energy consumption. Reducing the fans from running 24hours a day not only saves you energy consumption from the extract and supply fans but you also make considerable heating and cooling savings. Aside from the consumption reductions made, Intelli-Hood also reduces the energy cost making it good business sense. The pay back for Tesco Clonmel is 1.51 years which gives them a monetary saving of €9595 per year. Tesco Ireland are following in Tesco UK’s footsteps by making energy saving their top priority. Tesco UK have installed Intelli-Hood into 400 of their stores as part of their energy saving campaign.
The Bakery and Hot Chicken extract fan was monitored by a data logger for the period of two week. The graph below shows the results.
The light blue section shows week one before Intelli-Hood was installed and the dark blue shows week two after installation. The difference between the kWh before and after
are vast. It is this difference that gives Tesco Clonmel such a good pay back.
For an average of six hours a day the fans are not running at all, and when they are its at a
considerably lower rate. The staff and customer café was also monitored.
